Selling a Car Without Service History? Here's What to Do

How much does missing service history knock off your sale price?

The honest answer is: quite a lot. Private buyers and dealers both know that service history is a key sign of how well a car has been looked after, and they price on that basis.

As a rough guide:

• A car with no service history usually sells for 10–20% less than the same car with a full history
• On a £10,000 car, that comes to a shortfall of £1,000 to £2,000
• Every missing service stamp can take £100–£300 off perceived value
• Premium marques (BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche) tend to be hit harder for missing history

Dealers especially will lean on missing history to justify a much lower trade-in figure, often well beyond what the actual risk merits. That gap goes straight onto their margin.

Do you have to declare missing service history when selling?

There is no legal requirement to provide service records when you sell a car privately. What you must not do is misrepresent the vehicle's condition or history. In practice that means:

• You cannot say the car has a full service history when it does not
• You should not describe it in a way that implies better upkeep than you can back up
• Being straight about missing records protects you from disputes or legal claims once the sale is done

Most buyers raise service history among their very first questions. Being upfront is the honest approach and, over time, the practical one too.

How to recover a service history before you sell

Before you accept a lower offer, pause and ask: do the records actually exist somewhere? In most cases, they do.

Garages and dealerships log every service they carry out, usually digitally, and hold it for 10–15 years or more. A lost paper logbook rarely means the service history itself has vanished. Usually it just has not been retrieved yet.

A Service Log Book investigation usually costs a small fraction of the extra sale price it opens up. Plenty of customers claw back £500–£2,000 in added value simply by having the records ready when they sell.

What if you genuinely cannot recover the records?

Sometimes, particularly with very old vehicles, cars only ever serviced by now-closed independent garages, or vehicles with barely any maintenance, we may not be able to find complete records.

If that happens, your options are:

• Price honestly: build the missing history into your asking price rather than hoping buyers overlook it
• Show what you have: even partial records, invoices or receipts beat nothing at all
• Get a pre-sale inspection: an independent inspection report can reassure buyers about the car's current condition, even with no full history

Before you reach that point, though, it is always worth trying to recover the records first. It asks little of you, and what you stand to gain can be substantial.
