Mazda Service History, made simple

The date on a Mazda's registration document changes what its service record is worth. From 1 September 2025 every new Mazda carries a six year or 100,000 mile manufacturer warranty, replacing the three years and 60,000 miles that applied before. Cars registered either side of that line are covered on completely different terms, and the longer cover is conditional on the car having been maintained within Mazda's prescribed service programme. On most models that means every 12,500 miles or twelve months, whichever comes first, with the Mazda2 Hybrid on a tighter twelve months or 10,000 miles. Six years is long enough that a car will usually change hands at least once while still covered, which puts the second and third owners in the position of needing to prove something they were not there for.

Work done inside the Mazda network is logged against the car, and a dealer can retrieve and print it. Nothing done outside reaches that record, which is the ordinary arrangement across the industry and the ordinary reason histories look thin. The prescribed programme is what the warranty is written against rather than a general expectation of annual care, so on a car still inside its six years the dates and mileages in the record are the thing being relied upon, not the fact that servicing happened at all. The Mazda6e adds separate battery cover of eight years on top of the vehicle warranty.

Where Mazdas lose their history is mostly a function of how long people keep them. They tend to stay on the road, and a fifteen year old MX-5 or Mazda3 has usually passed through several owners and several garages, most of them independent and none of them able to write to the manufacturer's system. Enthusiast-owned cars are often the best maintained and the worst documented, because the work was done properly by a specialist who issued an invoice and nothing more. Older cars predate the digital record altogether and rely on a paper book that has had fifteen years to go missing. Dealerships change hands or give up the franchise, and imports arrive with an early life spent on another market's records. Putting the record back together is worth more on a recent car than it used to be, because on anything registered since that September change there are potentially several years of transferable warranty resting on it.
