What to do when your car service history has gone missing

Losing a service history book happens far more often than people think. It can go missing when you move house, inherit a vehicle, buy second-hand without the full paperwork, or simply lose track of documents across years of ownership.

The logbook is not the only place your history lives, though. Garages and dealerships hold their own records, digital and paper, of every service they carry out. Those records belong to your vehicle, and they can be retrieved.

So the first thing to do is stop assuming the history has gone for good. More often than not, the records are sitting in a garage database, waiting to be requested.

Can garages dig out old service records?

Yes. Most garages and franchised dealerships hold service records for 10–15 years, sometimes longer. Newer workshops keep everything digitally, and plenty of older paperwork has since been scanned or archived.

Doing it yourself is the hard part. You would have to work out every garage that might have touched the car, get in touch with each one, and keep chasing until the picture is complete. That legwork is what we take off your hands.

What records can we find?

Depending on the vehicle and its past, we may be able to recover:

• Digital service records from national chains (Kwik Fit, Halfords Autocentres, and the like)
• Independent garage service cards and job sheets
• Manufacturer service records held on brand-specific networks
• Oil change and inspection records from fast-fit centres

Even a partial history is worth having. Every confirmed service adds credibility and helps reassure a buyer or insurer that the car has been looked after.
