Service history is one of the first things a buyer looks at before committing to a used car. It shows how carefully the last owner treated the vehicle: were the oil changes done on time, was the timing belt swapped when it was due, and were faults sorted as they cropped up.

With none of that evidence, buyers fear the worst. They build in the cost of repairs they might be taking on and the risk of problems they cannot see. That doubt has a price, and it comes out of your pocket.

A car with a complete, stamped service history tells the opposite story: it has been properly cared for. Buyers pay a premium for that reassurance, and dealers put stronger offers on the table when the paperwork stacks up.

Full service history vs no service history: the price gap

A full service history usually adds somewhere between £500 and £2,000+ to a used car, depending on the make, model and age. On premium marques such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi, the gap tends to be wider again.

As a rough guide:

• A full service history can lift a used car's value by up to 25% compared with the same car with no records
• Every missing service stamp can knock £100–£300 off perceived value
• A completely absent history on a car more than 3 years old typically costs 10–20% of its market value

On a £10,000 car, that works out at £1,000 to £2,500, often over paperwork that already sits somewhere in a garage's database.

What buyers check in a service record

A serious buyer going over a used car will usually look at four things in the service record:

• Regularity — was the car serviced on time, every year or every 12,000 miles?
• Completeness — are there gaps? Missing stamps raise questions about what went on in between.
• Authorised servicing — was it looked after by a franchised or main dealer? On newer cars still under warranty, that really counts.
• Matching details — do the mileages in the service book line up with the MOT history? Anything that does not tally is a red flag.

If you cannot show any of this, buyers will either walk away or use the gap to drive the price down hard.

How to recover a missing service history before you sell

A Service Log Book investigation usually costs a small fraction of the value it puts back. Plenty of sellers claw back hundreds or thousands of pounds on the sale price simply by having the records ready.
