What does "no service history" actually mean?

When a car is listed with no service history, it usually comes down to one of these reasons:

• The logbook was lost — the paper service book went astray at some stage, often during a house move or when the car changed hands
• The history was never handed over — a previous seller held onto the paperwork, whether by oversight or on purpose
• The car genuinely was not serviced — occasionally the maintenance really was let slide

The first two happen far more often than the third. Most cars that appear to have no history were serviced on schedule, and the records have simply never been pulled together in one place.

Is a car with no service history worth worrying about?

It is riskier than buying a car with a full history, but it is not automatically a bad buy. What matters is whether you can establish that routine maintenance was kept up.

A handful of warning signs can hint at genuine neglect, so it is worth looking for:

• Oil that looks dark and dirty, or a low reading on the dipstick
• Sludge under the oil filler cap, which points to oil changes being skipped
• Rattles or timing-chain noise when starting from cold, a possible sign the timing system has been neglected
• Brake fluid that is overdue (it needs changing every 2 years whatever the mileage)
• An MOT mileage record that does not add up, or big gaps with no explanation

None of these prove neglect on their own, and a clean bill of health here is no guarantee the car was cared for. The only way to be certain is to track down the records.

What can you actually learn about a car's past?

A free MOT history check on GOV.UK lists every MOT the car has taken, with the mileage recorded each time and any advisories or failures. It is a handy first step, because mileage that rises steadily across the tests usually suggests honest ownership.

What MOT data will not tell you is anything about servicing. A car can sail through its MOT year after year and still never have had an oil change. To get the real garage records, service invoices and dealer entries, you have to go to the garages directly.
