Free Service Log Book Check – What Does It Really Show You?
Free lookups from GOV.UK and the DVLA cover MOT history and tax status — but none of them reveal whether your car has ever been serviced at a garage. Here's the reason, and where to turn instead.

What a free car history check covers
GOV.UK runs a free vehicle enquiry service that lets anyone look up a car by its registration number. What you can see includes:
- MOT history — dates of passes and fails, the mileage logged at each test, and any advisories
- Tax (VED) status — whether the car is taxed right now or declared SORN
- Core vehicle details — make, model, colour, engine size, and fuel type
- Outstanding safety recalls, in some cases
All of this is worth having. Recorded MOT mileages, for instance, can flag an odometer that has been wound back. The pattern of passes and fails hints at any faults that keep coming back. And checking the core details makes sure the car in front of you matches what's written on the logbook.
What a free check leaves out
Here's the blind spot plenty of buyers walk into: a free check says nothing about whether the car has actually been serviced.
MOT history only confirms the car was put in for its annual roadworthiness test. It won't tell you:
- Whether the engine oil was changed when it was due
- Whether the timing belt or chain was renewed at the interval the manufacturer specifies
- Whether brake fluid, coolant, spark plugs, air filters, or anything else was attended to
- Whether a full or interim service ever took place
- Which garage or dealership did the work
A car can show a spotless MOT record and yet have never been properly serviced. The two are completely different things.
Why service records aren't there to look up for free
MOT tests run through DVSA-authorised centres and get logged on a central government database. Services don't work that way: no garage is required to report them to any central body, and each one is a private arrangement between the garage and its customer.
Those records sit with whichever garage did the work. There's no national register of car services, so no government website can ever tell you whether your car was serviced — the data simply doesn't exist in any central, public form.
A free check can't close that gap. Someone has to go to the garages directly and ask for the records, and that's exactly what we do.
How servicelogbook.co.uk closes the gap
servicelogbook.co.uk was set up for one job: connecting public MOT data with the private records held by garages. We don't scrape information that's already public — we go to the garages directly and retrieve the records for you.
Give us your registration number
We pin down your vehicle and draw up a focused list of garages likely to hold records, based on your car's make, model, and where it has been.
We approach 9,000+ UK garages
Our team gets in touch with franchised dealerships, independent garages, and national service chains to track down your vehicle's service records.
Get a verified service history report
Every confirmed record goes into a secure digital report with dates, mileages, and service details — the sort of information no free check can hand you.
Is a full service history check worth paying for?
When you're buying used, the service history feeds straight into how reliable the car is, how long it'll last, and what it's worth. A small fee to confirm what maintenance has genuinely been done buys you real peace of mind — all the more so on pricier cars or ones with costly timing components.
When you're selling, getting missing service records back can lift your asking price by hundreds or thousands of pounds. More often than not, the investigation fee more than pays for itself.
A free check is a starting point. A full service history check gives you the whole picture.
