How to find AC service history

AC is one of Britain's oldest surviving marques, hand-building sports cars in tiny numbers long before the Cobra made the name famous worldwide. Because the cars were assembled by a specialist works, and later by small boutique operations, their maintenance paperwork tends to sit in private files, restoration folders and club archives instead of a franchised dealer system. If you are rebuilding an AC service history for a sale, an insurance policy or a valuation, the trail is almost always physical and personal.

What you can recover

  • Ask the previous keeper for their invoice and old-MOT folder
  • Contact the AC Owners' Club for chassis and history notes
  • Chase marque and kit-specialist garages for their job cards
  • Gather restoration and rebuild receipts noting dates and mileage
  • Pull the gov.uk MOT history and the DVLA V5C keeper record

What you’ll need to provide

Give us the registration, chassis number and engine number, plus whatever you already hold: old MOT certificates, invoices, photographs and any correspondence with an owners' club or restorer. If you know which independent specialist or engine builder last worked on the car, that single lead often unlocks the most useful part of an AC service history.

Common reasons it’s missing

  • The cars were specialist-built, so no franchised dealer file ever existed
  • Low production meant paperwork was rarely centralised anywhere
  • Older AC models predate today's rolling MOT record entirely
  • Engine and body rebuilds often changed hands with loose receipts
  • Cars left dormant or in storage lost paperwork between owners

Why AC records are scattered by nature

AC never ran like a volume manufacturer. Cars left the works in small batches, were often modified to order, and passed through enthusiast hands who kept their own notes. So an AC service history is usually a bundle of private documents rather than one continuous record sitting with a single garage.

Rebuilding it means piecing together whatever survives: a folder from one keeper, a specialist's job cards, a club dossier, and the official record held by the DVLA and the MOT service.

The AC Owners' Club as an archive

For a marque this rare, the owners' club is often the single richest source of continuity. Long-standing members and registrars may hold chassis notes, past sale details and photographs going back decades.

We can approach the club on your behalf, quoting the chassis number, to see what is on file for your specific car.

Specialists who actually touched the car

AC engines and running gear are usually looked after by a handful of trusted independent specialists rather than a dealer chain. These garages tend to keep detailed job cards because the work is bespoke and expensive.

If you can name the last specialist to service the car, we contact them first, since their records often fill the biggest gaps in an AC service history.

Restoration files and dated invoices

Many surviving AC cars have been rebuilt at least once. A restoration file, with dated invoices and the mileage noted, is treated by buyers and valuers as genuine service evidence.

Collecting those receipts and putting them in date order turns a loose box of paperwork into a credible, ordered history.

What the statutory record can and cannot show

The gov.uk MOT history service and the DVLA keeper record on the V5C give you dated, official markers such as recorded mileage and changes of owner. For older AC cars, though, the digital MOT trail may be short or missing because the vehicle predates it.

We use those official records to fix the timeline, then build the rest of the picture from private and club sources.

Setting honest expectations

With a marque as thinly documented as AC, no reconstruction can be guaranteed complete, and some periods of a car's life may simply have no surviving paperwork.

What we can do is work every realistic source and hand you an organised, evidenced AC service history that holds up when you sell, insure or value the car.

Service History for Every AC Model

Why drivers rely on us for their AC service history

Rebuilding a AC service history takes real investigation, not a quick database search. We check every record with the business that actually did the work, so what you get holds up in front of buyers, dealers, insurers, and finance companies.

Confirmed at the source

We go straight to franchised AC dealers and independent specialists and verify each service before it reaches your report — nothing guessed, nothing left unchecked.
